MacArthur 3rd graders enjoyed a trip to Southwest High School's agriscience program on September 27, 2024.
Students toured the Southwest facilities and learned about urban agriculture.
This included learning about aquaponics, a sustainable framing system which combines aquaculture and hydroponics to grow plants and fish. Students saw fish in tanks and helped feed them. They also harvested lettuce, which is grown in this system and provides fresh lettuce for Southwest High School students.
Third graders also visited the Southwest orchard and saw the apiary, and the bees hard at work, along with apple and pear trees and berry plants.
Students got to learn about chickens and even help feed them.
Southwest High School students provided the tours and shared what they have learned in the agriscience program with the 3rd graders.
